Is it possible for a Mini to survive long enough to die from rust?

Not when they’re owned by a 20 year old punk with no sense of self-preservation

I’m old, but I have no self - preservation, and I really want a green Mini.

Honestly though the 1st gen cars are pretty solid aside from the regular “bmw-ness”. Biggest issues they have are the main seals will start seeping oil, the front strut towers can mushroom a bit because of the stiff suspension
,
the serpentine belt tensioner can fail with miles and if it does it’ll probably
take the harmonic balancer
out with it. The supercharger also becomes a time
bomb with miles and it turns the water pump so if the SC fails the car overheats. Really the cars aren’t too
un
reliable it’s just that if something fails it could end up being more catastrophic than a normal car.

Stylistically, the R50 has aged extremely well.

It really bothers me that I read that and thought “I thought they were awful, but apparently they’re just like easier to own Jags.”

On a scale of 1 to ISIS how bad of an idea would it be for me to get an R50 as my first car

As a first car it certainly wouldn’t be the wisest decision
to make, do keep in mind it’s a decade old BMW after all. It’s going to be more expensive to maintain and
repair than a conventional
car.
That being said
The non-s model would be the best one to get, although down on power the lack of a supercharger makes it a lot easier to maintain and run
since you can put 87 in it, it has spare tire unlike the s models,
a conventional
water pump and you don’t have to worry about a $
2,000 supercharger grenading itself. Also if you find one make sure it’s a 6-speed because the 5-speeds a bit finicky.
Really it all comes down to how much you’ll willing to spend on a first car.

Do it! I don’t know how the R50 is but our non-S R56 wasn’t real quick but it was quick enough to be fun. Pretty reliable too.

The picture of CAR in my one of my son’s book of first words is an R50.

So far I’ve been playing it safe and looking at Hondas , maybe it’s time to look to other places
